As mentioned in my orig post, my drive *is* internal--right in a 5.75
inch bay. They sell them both ways....

As for the effect of dust, even if that is the cause, it is still
indicative of shoddy workmanship.  The rest of my box doesn't go belly-up.
What am I supposed to do?  Work in a clean-room?  Seriously, though, they
should build slightly more robust drive heads so a damaged disk won't
"infect" an otherwise good drive.
