I tried efax with a US Robotics Sportster and had the same problem.

My solution was to download the HylaFax RPM from /pub/contrib and install
it. It works great. It works so great that I set up one of our fax moderms
here in the office to recieve our faxes rather than the antique old
roll-paper fax machine that never seemed to reliably recieve them. The
only "downside" is, when sending a fax, remember to include your own cover
sheet and turn off the "default" cover sheet (it has SGI's logo on it :-).
The only "gotcha" I ran into was my own fault for not reading the
directions carefully in the "faxaddmodem" program (I had put a character
into the FAX negotiation identifier that most fax machines did NOT like).

If the other folks in the office ever get sophisticated enough to want to
send faxes of their own from their own workstations, the nice thing is
that Hylafax client software is available for their workstations so that
they can just send it to the Hylafax server and the Hylafax server takes
it from there (doing any redialing etc. required).
