/dev/cua2 should be for serial terminals or non-modem devices.
I may be wrong about this, but I think you should be using /dev/ttyS2 on
both - it should be a modem control device. But that doesn't explain why
your modem doesn't answer, which is independent of your computer really.
It's probably your S registers.
Add "ATS0=2" or however many rings you want it to wait.
You can also enable it in the dip switches, but it's probably best to
disable it there and let you init string handle it.
IF S0 is set to 0, it won't answer. Setting it specs the number of rings
to answer. I've been using Multitech modems for so long, I've been able
to forget how to mess with them :-) But that's what it sounds like.
For what it's worth to you, if your receiving faxes on the line also, you
should be running mgetty out of /etc/inittab too.
