On my system there is an entry in /var/log/messages showing the CONNECT
message returned by the modem. If you've got your modem set to show 
the true modem-to-modem speed rather than the serial port speed, you'll
have what you want.

How to configure your modem to do this varies. On some modems, setting
S95=1 will do it, on others not. Best to see your modem's reference manual.
