It's good tht ou're interested, but the first thing to realize is the
running Linux involves a lot of reading. Take a look at the information at
Linux Online <http://www.linuz.org/> and at the Linux Documenttion Project

Scary? Perhaps, to new users, but not difficult if your hardware is
supported.

It is to command line Linux as Win95 is to DOS. It gives the user a
point-and-click interface that's easier to use, but more limited.

There are hardware compatibility lists available for each distribution.
Since you're on this list you might check out the list at Redhat's web
site.
You might want to get a Linux book before getting started. It's completely
different from Windows. Even the culture is different. There are plnety of
online docs in the /usr/doc/ directory, and the man pages (man
commandname) are much better than anything Windows has. Be prepared to do
lots of reading...
