What exactly is not supported? One could, for instance, easily put together
a well supported BX machine with an UW SCSI drive. There is UDMA support in
2.0.34, but you said you wanted the spiffiest hardware, and that means SCSI.
Some of the latest video cards may not be supported, but there are still
very fast video cards supported (like the Millenium II AGP). It takes time
to write the drivers, so you can't expect the latest gee-whiz video card to
be supported, at least until the manufacturers start working more closely
with the XFree86 developers.
If one pays attention to the supported hardware list on Redhat's site then
there should be no problem putting together a fast Linux system.

The older motherboards and processors (i.e. LX board + a PII/300) are quite
a bit cheaper.

There's no magic about it. Supported hardware tends to be made by companies
who publish their specs.
