Could it be that you omitted the lilo installation step at the end of the
installation process? I did that and had similar problems to yours.

One has to install lilo to get a few _very_ important files installed on the
system. The clue was a message I saw during the boot process that complained
about something when trying to fix module dependencies, and that there were
no /etc/lilo.conf file installed.

I installed my machine twice from scratch with identical configurations but
for the choice of installing lilo or not. I then, in both cases, made a
recursive file list with "find" which I after both installations diff'ed.

On the system where I accepted the option to install lilo, the following
files and directories were installed that were missing on the pure boot
floppy system:

/etc/lilo.conf
/boot/boot.0306
/boot/map
/lib/modules/2.0.34-0.6/modules.dep
/lib/modules/preferred

The bottom line is that if one chooses to only go for the boot floppy, as
one is led to believe will suffice, one finds onself in my situation: with a
rather crippled system.

Cheers!
