Do you select any options or do the options really matter under print?

It might be specific to the file I was trying to print. I've got some
other pdf files here and as a test printed a few pages from them and
the printing works fine.

ghostscript is invoked to translate the pdf or ps to the bitmapped image
for the target printer. If you do a 'ps' while you're printing from
acroread, you'll see ghostscript running.
