Ahh, more information I should have included:
Permanent Internet connection via eth0, which is operational
(see http://gtoft.dyn.ml.org, also 204.210.106.4)
X: XFree86 SVGA server

Really strange, as it works fine on my non-networked laptop (aside from
the alt keys not working, and the folks at Metro being significantly less than
helpful).

I know nothing about an icon (I'm not using Caldera's desktop). I invoked
wabi with wabi -FS & but I can't do that now as I tried
to
uninstall it with rpm and the uninstall failed part way through. I can neither
install nor uninstall wabi right now.

I suspect my database may be inconsistent, but I don't know how to
repair it, other than Microsoft Standard Answer #4: Reinstall the OS.

Since my laptop and my desktop are very similarly configured (except
for X servers), maybe I can copy the rpm database from the laptop to
the desktop?

Ideas?

George
