        By default, root can't login from anywhere else except the Virtual
Consoles. 
        The main reason for this is that telnet, ftp, etc. use plain text
over the net and everyone with a sniffer can catch the password.
        Now, if you install ssh for instance you can safely login as root
remotely (sshd allows that if configured), because ssh encrypts 
everything.
