The '&' means you want to run a program in the background, so that you can
start other projects in the foreground, and let the program you started with
'&' keep working on its own. You probably wouldn't notice this if you started
X-Window, because then you wouldn't return to the shell prompt until X-Window
is closed. You'll notice the difference if you for example start xplaycd from
an xterm with the '&', because the CD-player will be started and you can keep
working in the same xterm.
