well i just had the precise same problem (my first night trying to install
linux)
and it would f the love of god (pick one) not find the netcard... well it
would appear, that all i needed was to disable PnP in the bios, check the
new settings, and use them instead.
with PnP disabled and with the NE2000 compat. driver, select the new values
i found... and so far im installing via FTP, which is a huge leap

thats all so far, from a guy who hates firewalls
