Hi ! This command (mkfs -t ext3 etc...) works fine on my system (Red Hat 7.1 , e2fsprogs 1.28, kernel 2.5.6). Perhaps ext3fs support is not compiled in ur e2fsprogs.If u get "filesystem not supported " then it is not compiled in ur kernel (that is less probable coz most current distros 've ext3 support")
