I am running off the KDE GUI.  I can open multiple consoles on it and do not
get any change in behaviour.  If you are talking about running level 3 and
using another virtual console this doesn't help.  If still seeing what was
piped is an undesired effect, I can't see why.  I use it all the time to be
able to run commands from the man page or whatever without opening still
another konsole.  Is there any other way to get that affect?

Use more than one terminal.  What you're seeing is the intended behavior
of most Xterm clones.
