Never seen the above error message, but I can confirm that the redhat
supplied MRTG package works just fine at this end. I monitor dozens of
devices using mrtg/rrdtool...

[scowles@voyager scowles]$ rpm -q mrtg
mrtg-2.9.17-8
[scowles@voyager scowles]$ rpm -q libpng
libpng-1.2.2-6

Have you tried to "just" monitor (collect) data from the mrtg server
interface?

Can you supply an example of your mrtg.cfg file?
