I usually re-program Ctrl-Alt-Del to do a shutdown instead of a
reboot. It's really simple:
Edit /etc/inittab and edit this line:
ca::ctrlaltdel:/sbin/shutdown -t3 -r now
Change it to:
ca::ctrlaltdel:/sbin/shutdown -t3 -h now
and save. After the next reboot, you can shut down your machine
cleanly with Ctrl-Alt-Del.
