Hello,
First, please forgive my ignorance about this. I am not that familiar with USB
supports and modules, so please bear with me. I am learning.

I have a cell-phone with high-speed internet connection, and USB data cable
from the cell phone (it's a Sprint Vision phone, FYI). I am trying to use it
as a modem in linux, following the instruction in this website:
http://www.natecarlson.com/linux/sanyo-4900.php

Basically, I think I just need to established ppp connection with the phone.

So, I enabled hotplug by doing:
# /sbin/hotplug usb

Plugging in the USB cable from my phone, I got the following from
/var/log/messages:

Jan 27 15:03:33 voyager kernel: hub.c: USB new device connect on bus2/1,
assigned device number 5
Jan 27 15:03:33 voyager kernel: usbserial.c: PL-2303 converter detected
Jan 27 15:03:33 voyager kernel: usbserial.c: PL-2303 converter now attached to
ttyUSB0 (or usb/tts/0 for devfs)
Jan 27 15:03:36 voyager /etc/hotplug/usb.agent: Setup pl2303 for USB product
67b/2303/202

If you look at the website I mentioned above, I should get the message that
the phone is recognized as an ACM device (whatever that is), and got message
something like this:

Nov 5 19:35:33 knight /etc/hotplug/usb.agent: Setup acm for USB product
474/701/0
Nov 5 19:35:33 knight kernel: usb.c: registered new driver acm
Nov 5 19:35:33 knight kernel: ttyACM0: USB ACM device
Nov 5 19:35:33 knight kernel: acm.c: v0.21:USB Abstract Control Model driver
for USB modems and ISDN adapters

As I said, I am not sure what ACM is. But when I tried to do
# pppd call sprint

it always end with connect script failed (the scripts are all provided in the
website above). I am wondering if this is because I don't have ACM support.

So my question, do I need ACM support to be able to use my phone as USB modem?
Does Redhat 7.3 has ACM support in the default kernel that ship with it?

Thanks a lot for any information and help.
