I've had this happen on some RH 7.3 machines, I suspect an upgrade of something caused the problem. If you stop and start xfs and check the logs, it will complain about some fonts. X is failing because it is asking xfs for a "default" font and not getting it. >From a shell, go to the directory listed for the font in the xfs error message and run 'mkfontdir', then stop/start xfs again. Alternately, one could reinstall the fonts, but if you look at install scripts for the fonts, they just run mkfontdir as well.
