You might _not_ be getting other errors. Or you might be getting other
errors which aren't as apparent to you. Compression is peculiar in that
it exercises a system (somewhat strenuously) and then makes a hard
record of the output. Many other system-intensive processes will only
register their errors in more subtle ways, like performance degradations
that humans don't even notice. But compressed files are highly
error-sensitive. (How sure are you, BTW, that you aren't getting other
errors? Is this a recent development? How long have you been having
this problem and did its onset coincide with any changes you made to
your site?)

Didn't you also say that you were having these problems with a Mac? I
assume that the Mac is not running Linux; so if I recall correctly, you
have three OS's on three different physical machines which are all
misbehaving in the same way. Is that right?
Like others, I suspect hardware trouble, but hardware trouble doesn't
usually express itself across boxen like this unless (a) you are a cheap
bastard who insists on buying crummy equipment (you do not appear to
fall into this category) or (b) your _site_ has something going on which
is upsetting all of the machinery.
How's your supply of current? Are you using line conditioning? What
about overwhelming sources of radio-frequency interference, like high
power cables or transisters? Power trouble and RF are sort of remote
possibilities, but I don't know what else would cause hardware problems
across boxen like this.
