I've been having a few probs recently.. most are unrelated but I
thought I'ld get them all off my chest at once.. saves making multiple
posts..

The system in question is running RH5.0...

        1) I altered my settings for localhost and domain name etc. in
netcfg and now sendmail hangs for ages when I start the box up.. I know
these two are related but I can't remember how to fix it.. What should I
have in /etc/hosts and /etc/HOSTNAME ? Is there any other files that I
should alter too?

        2) I installed the updated version of the isapnp tools and now when
I start the system I get "isapnp : cant find "libc.so.5" " I think thats
the error anyhow.. I guess I'm missing a library somewhere.. but how can
that happen when I installed it from an RPM.. the whole idea of RPM's was to
make sure that u didn't get problems like this i thought?

        3) I've got a AWE64 and have sucesfully configured it using
sndconfig.. I've noticed that there is also a special driver for the AWE64
knocking about.. does this sound any better for playing things like *ahem*
mp3s?

        4) I've tried to recompile my kernel many times but I always seem to
screw it up and need to re-install the system.. so two questions really..
what is the EXACT sequence of commands needed to configure a new kernel..
currently i'm doing..

        # make xconfig
        <configure the thing>
        # make dep
        # make clean
        # make zimage
        # make modules
        # make modules_install
        # make zlilo

when I restart tho I generally get problems flying across my
screen.. problems with "missing dependancy's" is a common one for my
modules... ppp sometimes doesn't work.. and I'm not even 100% sure if I'm
actually using the NEW kernel :\

The other question is.. how do I make my system fail safe so that if
I do make a dodgy kernel I can simply boot with the old kernel try and sort
out the problems?

Well.. thats the lot.. hope someone out there can actually decipher
wtf I'm gibbering about :)

        Thanks in advance...

Best regards
