If you look at both fstab and mtab, you'll find exactly what the partitions refer to. You can match them up from the mtab file. Labelling, as the man page suggests, is for making "the system more robust: adding or removing a SCSI disk changes the disk device name but not the filesystem volume label". > What if more then one partitions exist with that > label?
