Greetings list,
I'm trying (without success) to get some MS fonts available to the Gimp.
According to the Gimp user pages, I need to configure the fontserver (xfs) to
serve the fonts - Gimp doesn't have a built-in font renderer.
Reading http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Font-HOWTO/xfonts.html tells me I
need to make a new font directory, copy the fonts into it, run ttmkfdir and mkfontdir
within the new fonts dir and then chkfontpath will add that dir to xfs' config. Which
it does. However on restarting xfs I get:-
"ignoring font path element [new font dir] (unreadable)"
reported in syslog and the new fonts are not available to Gimp.
I've spent the last 24hrs googling this without finding out what I'm missing
so I throw myself upon the tender mercies of this list....
Just answering my own post so the solution might be found by future generations....
The above procedure is correct, ie run "ttmkfdir >fonts.scale" "mkfontdir" in the new fonts directory and restart xfs.
It seems one of my fonts was corrupt and caused the above error - copying one font
at a time an running ttmkfdir each time weeded out the offending rascal and got my
font server to recognise the fonts. Now my redhat box has the same fonts as my windows
box.
