As somebody else pointed out, your desktop isn't recognizing all of your
memory and instead is swapping.   This will make it suck...

You don't meet the recommended requirements for your laptop.  For X, the
*minimum* is 128MB with 192MB recommended.  Expect it to crawl unless
you want to at least lighten up your windowing system.
