Of course.  That's not particularly hard.  (From DOS, anyway)... 
linux protects ring 0, but I understand that the svga lib does just
his - accesses ring 0 for you.

Unless I've misunderstood graphic card modes, when placed in the
simple
text mode, that the console use, high res graphics is NOT available. 
It would
mean switching the graphic card mode beofre showing images.
