Well, I got it going again. Here's what I did:
-Copied libc-2.0.7.so from another linux box to the NT partition on the dead
box;
-Rebooted the dead box with the original disks in rescue mode;
-Mounted the partitions:
my original / to /tmp/root
my NT (fat) to /tmp/dos
-Copied the library over via
cat /tmp/dos/libc-2.0.7.so > /tmp/root/lib/libc-2.0.7.so
-Reboot & Linux is alive again.
I don't know what I would have done without the NT partition other than
reinstall & restore, since libc is too big to fit on a floppy. This
disturbs me a little bit.
If I could just figure out what caused the file to up and disappear in the
middle of the night...the affected machine is not connected to the internet
except when the dialup is running, which it wasn't...
