This is not a solution to your problem as such but... maybe you could save them as csv or excel format from inside star office. so that they can be opened in excel. in the case of word processor docs, saved as doc or rich text should make them openable in ms word. if this can be done of course... Have you tried using openoffice at all? note there is a version of openoffice.org for windows and i expect there may be for star office as well.
