after 'walked up' the internet, i find this 'RedHat' ressource
and hope for a chance to get clear with s.th i can't understand. My system is "RedHat 8.0" on "kernel-2.4.18-26.8.0", the
hardware comes from "Dell" it's an "Inspiron-notebook-8000". So if i try
to play a 'DVD' with music on it, the result is a choppy, interrupted
record. By the 'internet' i could read that hint to add the line:
"options ide-cd dma=1" to '/etc/modules.conf'; and really somehow the
'music-dvd' plays in a nice way. But then i boot the machine (next day)
again and try to start 'x' the 'gnome-panel' was lost and i could read
the error message, that there are no panel for '~/'. (So i get s.th like
a compensate-panel, but everything seems wrong and without function.)
Also i had looked (ls -al) to '~/' the entrance for the panel where a
question mark at the beginning and a long number that followed. (So i had
to delete that sentence in '/etc/modules.conf/'; and 'startx' is quite
allright again.)
Also with 'hdparm -d 1 /dev/hdb' there is no chance - the output was: "/dev/hdb:
setting using_dma to 1 (on)
HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted
using_dma = 0 (off)"
For a little help from your 'side' i would be glad!
Best Regards
