Bought a DecPc 433 Workstation for $1 at a salvage sale. I think I got a
bargain:
486dx/33Mhz
20mb RAM
Built-in 10base2/10baseT 10mbps networking
Built-in SCSI
external SCSI box w/1 212mb 3.5" drive, room for two more 5.25" drives
(and an additional 433 w/12mb for $1 that will be used for parts, if needed.)
I'm wanting to install linux on it, and use it mainly for a general purpose
box for running simple scripts and programs, telnetting to my ISP and linux
webserver, and generally just playing around on. I currently have Redhat
5.0 installed (dual boot) on my P100/64mb system at work. I need to free up
some drive space, and viola! This bargain came along to help expediate the
process. And also it takes time to reboot and startup linux on my primarily
Win95 production environment.
I added a Toshiba XM-4101TA CD-ROM to do the install. It's not working
right under DOS, although it is seeing it. Driver problem, no doubt. I'm
confident Linux will see it with no problem.
Anyway, here's what I learned about the internal workings of it so far,
through DOS, and the drivers already installed on it:
Video chipset: Appian
SCSI controller: Adaptec 1520
Network: Dec100 IRQ: 5 I/O: 0200
My only questions are these:
Does linux support this Dec100 network adapter natively?
What about the video? I know I'll want a bigger drive if I run X, but will
I be able to push this Appian chipset beyond 16 colors?
Any problems with the AHA-1520 SCSI controller I should be aware of?
I'm mainly looking for anyone that has installed linux on this box or is
currently running linux on it. E-mail me privately for any tips that'll
help me along in this adventure. :)
