It actually turned out to be pretty darned easy.  I read dmesg to figure
out which USB port to use (actually, it just showed me two USB ports, and
I used the one which wasn't taken up by the mouse), then created the
symlink /dev/pilot -> /dev/ttyUSB1.  I set the permissions on both
/dev/pilot and /dev/ttyUSB1 to 777 (a tad lenient, I suppose, but nothing
else seemed to work).  I also had to upgrade pilot-link.  Maybe that was
the crucial link.

Then, because I'm using Evolution, I went into gnomecc and set the Pilot
configuration to point at /dev/pilot; it was originally set to point at
/dev/cua0.

Then I take the annoying extra step of opening an Xterm and launching
gpilotd; once that's done, everything works like a charm.

Lastly, double-check and make sure you're running the latest versions of
pilot-link and gnome-pilot.  Earlier versions don't do USB.
