Is there something more in /var/log/Xerrors?
Is portmap running on your system?
Is this happening for a regular user or also for root?
Lastly, try "strace startx >logfile", wait until it exits, then
check the logfile (don't panic when you see the content, I don't
understand much myself either, but I can check what files it
tries to open, and which are not found)
