Sorry to reply to an old thread, but I didn't see any final answers.  Here's
the deal:  Using uw-imap, there are several different mailbox types
supported.  Only 1 or 2 of them support 'shared access' (multiple processes
accessing the mail store at the same time).

mbx is recommended.  Its driver is compiled in a ready to go.  Convert your
mailbox to mbx format using mbxcvt (supplied with the c-client source).
This will avoid the error message you mention.

You should really read the uw-imap documentation: it has a good description
of each mailbox format, pros and cons, and where you would use each.
