Hello, I have several newbie questions...

1) Where is the usual/best place to download software to when installing
tar.gz(s) ot rpm(s)? I've been downloading them to /tmp and then either
using 'rpm -iv' or unzipping/untarring them there. If the latter a new
directory is created from which I run ./configure, make & make install.

2) I assume rpm places all the installed components where they should be. Is
this a safe assumption?

3) Does the ./configure, make & make install process do the same thing, that
is does it place everything where it suppose to go? Or am I suppose to
unzip/untar the software being installed in thedirectory where it will be
kept?

3) How do I know if a piece of software has been installed if I didn't use
rpm to install it?

4) Once I've done either 1 or 2 above is it okay to remove the installed
software from /tmp? ( I am getting quite a few direcoties in my /tmp and
would like to be sure it's all right to remove them. )

5) I'm using Redhat 8.0... Is there a listing somewhere that explains what
the various directories and subdirectoies are used for? I'm finding
'things' being stored in several different directories when they get
installed.

TIA
