Greetings,
    You could use pam_ldap.so in the nss_ldap RPM 
(from www.padl.com) and /usr/sbin/authconfig to 
enhance PAM on your RHL server (both included in 
your RH Linux distro). Using this PAM lib, gives 
any IMAP/POP3 server that uses PAM the ability to 
authenticate using LDAP and/or your /etc/passwd file 
as needed. If you are getting into the LDAP business, 
you might want to check out nscd (Name Server Caching 
Daemon) to speed up, among other things password 
related queries.
