I imagine that Evolution does support LDAP, but I know for certain that Squirrelmail does. In fact, there was a good thread on this list yesterday on using Squirrelmail as a front-end for Exchange. In that thread, someone described using LDAP to bring the Exchange global address book into Squirrelmail. With a little modification, this could be applied to any LDAP server.
Evolution does indeed support LDAP. So do Mozilla, and pine. Mutt can call an external program to support just about any kind of database. There are scripts that use this feature to call LDAP servers. I use one of these myself. The next version of KMail is supposed to have good LDAP support.
If you decide to switch back to a Windows mail client, then you;ll be glad to know that LDAP is supported by Outlook, Outlook Express, Netscape, Mozilla, Eudora, and others.
LDAP is definitely the way to go if you ever think you may use different mail clients. It is supported in most mail clients and includes utilities to dump the data into a human-readable plain text format (LDAP Interchange Format -- LDIF). Netscape and Mozilla export LDIF, and Evolution can import LDIF, as can Outlook Express. So even if you choose later not to run an LDAP server, LDAP data is readily usable by other programs. The LDIF format is also easily parsed and convertible into other formats for use by software that does not support LDAP and cannot import LDIF.
