hi listfolk,

any guesses for me what might actually be amiss? rh73 X window drives
my sis 6326 nicely. rh9 won't? we're talking 2 year old hardware here.

i get:
init: Id "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

XFree86.setup.log says:
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/drivers/video/sis/sisfb.o: init_module: No such device
among other things (below)

sisfb.o isn't missing. the hardware isn't missing. what is?

whatever is missing is likely related to anaconda barfing instead of
retrying on a badly read (method=ftp) package, and i continued the
install as an upgrade. so some mysterious magic X prep step that
anaconda maybe usually does is maybe missing for me.

(meanwhile i'm also still wondering why my attempts to download iso's
all quit at exactly 102400000 bytes. am trying to raise my isp on this
one.)

i put XF86Config-4 from rh73 in as /etc/X11/XF86Config under rh9 and ran
redhat-config-xfree86. the result, in detail:

# redhat-config-xfree86 --set-hsync=30-69 --set-vsync=50-120 --set-depth=15
--set-resolution=1024x768 -vvv
Read configuration file /etc/X11/XF86Config
* ddcprobe returned bogus values:
ID: MEIa30a
Name: None
HorizSync: None
VertSync: None

Freeing option 0x8194e18
Backing up /etc/X11/XF86Config to /etc/X11/XF86Config.backup
Writing configuration to /etc/X11/XF86Config
Removing old /etc/X11/X
Creating /etc/X11/X symlink
