Specificly, you need loopback support in the kernel you're running during the build. I've have a kernel RPM upgrade break because of that. (And the RPM didn't catch the breakage. Ugh. Tacky install script.)
Yes, at some point in the recent past, "modprobe loop" was added to the preinstall script and to the preuninstall script to prevent that issue.
