Should be set to 1.1.  1.4 does not work well.  (The lockups occur during 
boot using 1.4 so it is probably not that.)

http://www.memtest86.com/ has a memory check utility that is *highly* 
recommended.  Test the ram.  That is the first thing to check when system 
hangs start occuring.  It is a tiny boot floppy/CD that will show you 
where there are problems.
