This second reading (timing buffered disk reads) with
doing some adjustments with hdparm, I have gotten to
be as high as 96-100 MB/sec without a load. With a
load this reading is at times as low as 2.5-2.7
MB/sec. Nothing has changed and all settings from
'hdparm -i /dev/hda' show the settings are still the
same as before. The hard drive is a UDMA device.

The CPUs have not breaken a sweat according to 'top'.
However, the load average floats between 40-80. I know
this is related to the drive activity. As soon as the
load average drops in the middle of the night to
around 10-15 things seem ok for a while.
