A much cleaner way on RH is to do this:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/gpm stop
/usr/games/quake2/quake2
/etc/rc.d/init.d/gpm start
Just put this in a shellscript (add "#!/bin/sh" at the top) and put that
in /usr/local/bin as for example "q2".
