If you have made your soundcard work with, say, xmms, then lookout for what sound daemons your running, if any (i.e. esd, or that of kde or another, or any at all) and look for what sound daeoms your apps are trying to use, if any. An how they are configured. What could be happening is that they keep stepping on each others toes.
