For a completely different kernel version, that shouldn't be a problem,
as the modules will have its own directory path. But, in the case of the
same version kernel, that was a concern of mine as well. It did cause me
trouble when I tried adding Joliet CDROM support to 2.0.32. Part of my
problem was that I overwrote the good 2.0.32 kernel. I lost PPA support to
the parallel port Zip drive. When I pulled the kernel from the CDROM and
booted to it, the PPA support still didn't work. I had to completely
reinstall 5.0.

The reinstall wasn't as bad as it sounds. As long as you don't let Linux
reformat your disks, it just puts the distribution down on top of what you
have. Before the reinstall, I saved a few of the configuration files that
I needed and put them back after the install was over. Obviously I lost
Joliet support, but I got back PPA support.

What I did learn was not to install the gcc 2.8.x compiler, as it screws
up starting of X. I do not know why, just that it does. I've installed
the 2.7.2.3-9 gcc that is available from the Redhat site. I need it because
I have the Cyrix chip compiler bug. Hopefully a 2.8.x (or later) version
of gcc will be fixed, so that recompiling the kernel and using XFree86 will
not result in X not working.
