I use xdm all the time - even on standalone machines, including a laptop.
to start xdm at boot time set the default run level to 5
to shut machine down in an xterm window su to root and enter "halt" to
shutdown and halt the machine or "reboot" to shutdown and reboot.
an alternative to "reboot" command press ctrl-alt-f1 (or f2 - f6) to get
to a virtual console. then press ctrl-alt-del to shutdown and reboot.
I use a boot manager (Masterbooter (shareware--simple, works) and on some
machines SystemCommander (commercial--fancy)). when the boot manager
comes up i either power down or reboot as needed
one more xdm tip--to start another xdm session on same machine to the same
or another host from an xterm or virtual console do:
X -query <hostname> :1&
this will start another xdm login on display 1 - virtual console 7.
I've had 6 xdm sessions going (displays 0-5 - vc's 7-12) at one time
and switch between then with ctrl-alt-fn, n=7 - 12.
if you use this:
X -query <hostname> -once :1&
xdm session will go away when you log out of it.
there is also an rpm called xdm3d or something similar that makes
a nice login screen
