I'm afraid I can't say for sure, as up to now I've done only the most
trivial C++ programming. Plain old C seems to compile fine with
either gcc or egcs.

My impression is that egcs is well-behaved if installed correctly in
parallel with gcc, but I've got my doubts about my particular
installation.

This is how I'll probably proceed.
My original intention was to set up the most standard, reasonably
up-to-date environment I could and start learning C++ in earnest. So
far, I'm having my troubles with example code from Lippman's "C++
Primer" (3rd ed., just published). I don't really need namespaces,
but I'm surprised I can shoot myself in the foot with header
files. :-)
