Win98 Blasts Off
                     Wired News Report

                     12:15pm 23.Jun.98.PDT
The Silicon Valley Linux Users Group will mark
this week's launch of Microsoft Windows 98 with a
special launch of its own, in the middle of a
                     California community college parking lot.

In cooperation with a local model rocketry club,
the group plans to send a 24-inch missile soaring
to an altitude of at least 594 feet -- with stable
flight provided by four tailfins made from cut-up
copies of Windows 98 beta CDs.

The event, called Launch Win98 ("please do not
call this a 'Win98 Launch,'" the group said on its
Web site) will be attended by fans and supporters
of the freeware, Unix-based Linux operating
system that is maintained and developed by
                     hackers across the Net.

Organizers say they will adhere to strict safety
rules set by The San Francisco Bay Area National
Association of Rocketry, and that the Windows
98-stabilized rocket will not crash "on purpose."
Instead, the craft is expected to parachute safely
                     to earth.

"If it does crash, just like with Windoze, it will be
unintentional," the Linux group said on the event's
                     Web page.

Liftoff is scheduled for this Sunday at 2pm, in
Parking Lot B at De Anza College.

                     Microsoft declined comment.
