Something is changing when you remove hdb that causes GRUB not to be
able to find the .conf file.  Maybe the partitions are being renumbered
or something to that effect.  I suggest you get a listing before
removing the hdb and after removing with the idea that something is
causing GRUB to lose where the .conf file is located.
