I am currently running RedHat 5.0 with kernel 2.0.32 on an Intel Pentium
233MMX with 128 MB of RAM, Adaptec 2940U PCI scsi controller, 3com 3c905
PCI NIC, and multiple SCSI and IDE drives. The problem I am having started
after upfrading from RH4.2 to 5.0, but it also was happening when I
upgraded my kernel from 2.0.30 to 2.0.32. When using the keyboard and
monitor attached to the CPU (the "console" in this case), I am having
general protection errors when switching between virtual consoles with the
Alt-Fx keys. It also sometimes happens when running X from the console,
but it all seems related to the VC switching procedures. I have tried to
isolate the problem, but I am just going crazy fighting with it. I have
worked to make sure I have all of the latest RedHat RPM's and libraries as
well. I have included a couple of stack traces from /var/log/messages for
you to check out. I have searched all available resources for the general
protection 1018, but have found nothing. This is a production system, so
it is a fairly critical issue. The only workaround thus far is not to use
the console, but that is not very practical. Please feel free to forward
this to ANYONE who may be of some assistance. Thank you for your time.

The machine sometimes locks hard when this happens, but most of the time
the console just dies. I tried a different video card just for kicks, but
the same problem occurs. I have included 2 for fun. The second of the 2
left the console with a puke green screen filled with ! marks. The rest of
the machine is fine.
