Yes it should, but, and there is a nasty butt.

After I recompiled 2.0.32 with 2.8.1, X refused to start.  Someone else
mentioned it to me.  I tracked down an earlier version of 2.7.2 and used
it instead.  Because I has the Cyrix chip compiler bug, I needed the special
version.  In any event, the 2.7.2 version compiled the kernel and let X
start.

There appears to be some kind of nasty bug in the code that 2.8.1 produces
that causes XFree86 to not start.
