I am leaning toward an installation issue. is the scsi bus properly terminated? cables/connections good? drive turned on? plugged in? As I am not familiar with this particular drive perhaps some one with a broader range of scsi experience can step in for hardware troubleshooting tips. If it does not show up in dmesg then in my experience is is not going to work. Did you reboot in the case of an external drive?
