Anybody heard of Akadns before? Anyone know why a Redhat v9 box cannot resolve their queries specifically?
This is Akamai - a world wide distributed web system that runs primarily via DNS and some fancy layer4 routing.
I figured that it might be Akamai, but whois linked akadns to Tucows, no idea what the link is.
Actually, TUCOWS are simply their Domain Name Registrar

That is the effect of saying "dunno who owns them, but ask TUCOWS as they know" - so we ask TUCOWS and..

your problem wont be bind 9 - no doubt someone else will come up with the answer soon - I'll have a think about it in the morning tho if no one else responds.. (2am here)
Will get hold of the ISP again and see what they have to say.
What you will probably find is that the hop before the Bind 9 box is doing something with the packets. If you are not even seeing them with tcpdump then they are simply not being sent to the box.
_why_ this is the case could be an interesting one to answer - because of the way Akamai work you may find you are requesting a domain name, the Akamai servers return your closest node which is in turn queried and you don't have a route to - traceroutes to the IP's involved may also highlight where the problem is.
