I leave my computer on continually, and once each week,
/etc/cron.daily/logrotate closes out the log files,
renames the old ones (which I can delete) and continues
logging.

/etc/logrotate.conf controls the rotating process.

The old logs are named messages.1, messages.2, ...

man logrotate explains.
